Blossoming in Rugby and the minorities
Football, rugby, wrestling are sports that are hugely dominated by men. Today in these disciplines, women are toppling records, filling bridges and also playing major roles in advisory. Our Reporter caught up with Eunice, Director of Women’s Rugby at Mwamba Rugby Football Club, the first African Women’s Rugby team in Kenya.
Who is Eunice?
I am an advocate of the High Court of Kenya by profession with a passion of human rights and justice. I am currently working as the Africa Legal officer with Minority Rights Group International Kampala Office.
Are you a Rotarian?
Not yet, but aspiring.
How did you get to learn about Rotary Roses?
Firstly, I was Introduced to Rotary by a Rotaract friend of mine here. I later learnt about the Rotary Roses from. Rotary Club of Kampala Naalya where I am a guest. I am passionate about community projects and mentoring youth especially girls.
Tell us about your role in Mwamba Rugby Football Club.
Currently I am a director in charge of welfare and mentorship. Because of Covid-19, most of our players were psychologically affected with the travel bans- that meant no team games or travels .We are working with psychologists to give some support as well as providing online training and capacity building. Back at home we do several rugby clinics as CSR activities, we hope to inspire a new generation of female rugby players I’m happy to mentor young girls and women and teach them the importance of hard work, Girls who play rugby, have a high self esteem and learn to how to work hard, always giving 110%
