BREAKING THE SILENCE
(A true life story)

How a Corporate Ugandan Woman Chose Her Children Over Abuse

Mona, a senior executive at a leading Kampala corporation, was admired for her sharp mind, professionalism, and leadership. On the surface, her life seemed perfect, but behind closed doors, she endured months of emotional manipulation and escalating physical abuse from her partner. Arguments that started as shouting matches grew into threats, slaps, and one terrifying night when Mona found herself cornered and bruised in her own home. The abuse was not limited to her, her children too began to internalize the fear and tension, withdrawing from friends and school, struggling to sleep, and showing signs of anxiety.

For Mona, the breaking point came when she realized the abuse was trickling down, shaping her children’s sense of safety and normalcy. Leaving was terrifying; it meant stepping away from societal expectations, risking professional gossip, and starting over. Yet, with courage and support from two friends, she accessed counselling, legal assistance, and resources to rebuild her family’s life. Mona eventually returned to work, stronger, and became an outspoken advocate, sharing her story to highlight that GBV does not discriminate wealth, education, or status, it offers no immunity.

Her experience reveals a hard truth: gender-based violence happens in homes, workplaces, and communities, often hidden behind closed doors, and its ripple effects on children is profound.

Every one of us has a role in stopping it, notice signs, provide support, educate others, and hold abusers accountable. We cannot remain silent. By speaking out, advocating for survivors, and protecting vulnerable children, we can break the cycle of violence.

This story is shared with Mona’s permission. Personal details have been changed to ensure safety.
